Pupils
Clothes
In olden days people wore no uniforms, well some people might have worn
uniforms but not many. Most pupils didnt have any shoes at all. Some might
have had wellington boots. If it was a rainy day their clothes would be
soaking wet and they might be staying in them the full day at school.
Somtimes they might be able to dry them if they were sitting beside a
stove.
Transport
Years ago people had to walk to school. Most of the children had no car
in the family. Some of the children got blisters on their feet. In those
days there was no medication. There weren’t many bikes outside the
school. If you had to walk it would take more than a half hour to get
there. Some of the children walked through the fields if they lived in
the country-side.
Lunches
All the pupils got for lunch was a bit of bread and butter and if they
were lucky maybe a bit of meat. If it was the right time of year they
might get a piece of fruit. They would have to be very lucky if they got
anything else to eat. But usually it would just be a bit of bread and
butter or else a sandwich with a bit of cheese. Sometimes their bread
got all soggy because they had no lunchbox and had to walk.
Punishment
The punishment they got was getting hit on the hand with a cane. They
were only punished if their writing was not good . The thing they got
punished with was a cane. It depended on how bad your writing was. And
the cane was made out of metal or a stick. Another punishment was getting
pulled by the ear. And sometimes their ear would have been torn.
