National
Children's Choir
Fifth
and sixth classes took part in the National Children's Choir
concerts in Portlaoise and Tullamore. This was a wonderful
occasion for everyone and was just reward for a year of preparation
under the expert guidance of music teacher Linda Lee. Seeing
300 children on stage singing their hearts out was an unforgettable
experience not only for the children but also for their families
and friends who packed both venues. |

Happy
Easter
The theme in art was the Easter chick. See some of our work
on the infants page. |
St.
Patricks Day 2005
Our school entered the St. Patrick's Day parade in Mountbolus.
Our theme was 'Gortnamona - Now and Then.' The children walked
displaying modern day school life. Behind them was a float
displaying schooldays in Gortnamona in 1965 - the year the
present school opened. The float was manned by past pupils
who attended the school when it first opened. They really
enjoyed their reunion and many stories were exchanged about
the good old days. The judges were obviously impressed as
they won a prize for best float. Later, flushed with success,
they headed to the Kilcormac parade and won the award for
'Exceptional Entry.'
See photos of the day on our gallery
page.

Winter
- Feeding the Birds
We
put up bird feeders this winter and the boys in sixth class
made sure that the birds didn't go hungry. See some photos
on the gallery page. |
Our
Christmas Cards
This year the Parents' Committee got pupils from all classes
to design their own Christmas cards. The winning entries
were chosen by the printers and featured on cards sold in
the school. The cards were a big hit and sold very well,
raising funds for the committee to help pay for treats for
the pupils such as the annual visit of Santa to the school.

School
Renovations
During the Summer and Hallowe'en holidays major renovations
were carried out at the school. Old panels and windows were
replaced by walls and double glazed windows. The attic was
insulated, new ceilings fitted and improved lighting was
installed throughout the school. It has left the classrooms
much warmer and brighter.

Our Little
Visitor.
Last
Friday at breaktime Mrs Lambe found a goldcrest on the basketball
court. It hit the window and fell on the ground. It was a
female. Mrs Lambe picked her up. The bird was stunned. It
flapped its wings a lot in her hand. Mrs Lambe showed Mr Daly.
He took a few pictures of the bird. After a few minutes the
bird recovered. Eventually the bird got up and flew away.
She was o.k. You can see more about the goldcrest on our projects
page.

A
Visit To The Bog
Our visit to the bog with Dr. Catherine O'Connell from
the I.P.P.C. was a great day. We studied plants and creatures,
caught insects with our nets and wrote about all we had observed
on our walk. We also heard the cuckoo and the curlew. |
