Jobs & Skills...
The world is very different today compared to hundreds of years ago. People often had to make things themselves. Some skills from years ago are not as common nowadays. In our area many people had useful skills. Paddy Casey of Killurin was the last basketmaker in this area. He made potato baskets, turf baskets and a big basket called a kish. Jack Mahon [Snr] of Mountpleasant, Michael Mahon [Snr] of Killurin and Paddy Tiquin were all experts at making baskets. The local blacksmiths in the area were Jack Mahon, Bill Mahon of Ballincanty and Joseph Lynam of Killurin. Jack Mahon had a forge at Mountpleasant, Bill Mahon had a forge at Ballincanty, Joseph Lynam had a forge at Killurin and Jack Ryan had a forge at the Blackline. The blacksmiths made horseshoes, ploughs, forks and spades. There were two cobblers in the area; one of them was Charlie Dunne of Ballincanty. Sometimes he wouldn't make or repair shoes or boots unless someone told him all the news. There were no tailors in the area, all the clothes were repaired by the local women.

Nicholas Sullivan made harnesses. He travelled from place to place. J. Sutherland was a carpenter. He made barrows and other wooden things.

Today
Nowadays the work that people do is very different from years ago. We live in a rural or farming area but only 4 out of 36 families have their main income from farming. 18 out of 36 families have both parents working outside the home at some time or other. These are some jobs people work at: - fitter, mechanic, plumber, builder, steel fabricator and erector, carpenter, electrician, driver, factory work, clerical or office work, services and shops, and working with computers.
