Randles
On
our trip up to Ard Aoibhinn Sr Mary brought Aoife, Niamh and Laura to
Peggy Randles house to ask her a few questions.
Peggy lived in an old thatched house in Pollough. The house is 300 years
old and some of her family still live there. It was only a two-roomed
house. She was one of twelve children.
She went to school in Pollough. She liked maths but didn’t like
Irish. One of her teachers wasn’t as nice as the rest; she would
occasionally hit the children. Peggy used to play Mothers and Chickens.
The way you play is: the chickens run off in different directions and
Mother has to catch them before they get killed. It is like what we call
tag. Another game she played was Jackstones. She explained how to play
that too. You get five stones and lay them on the palm of your hand; then
throw them up and try to catch them all. The person with the most stones
wins.
Her favourite pastimes were ballroom dancing and going to céilís
but nowadays she is not able to dance anymore.
Peggy has two daughters and had a husband who sadly passed away. Her two
daughters visit her regularly but don’t live near. She still has
family in Pollough.
She worked in Salts in Tullamore and her job was to make the cloth finer.
The main loom was known as the Jumbo.
Peggy went back and forth from Britain on the Princess Mod. She went just
after the war so they weren’t really ready for people to go on board
the boat so it was a very uncomfortable way to travel.
Peggy has a great sense of humour. When we were asking her questions she
said that when we were trying to remember the number of her house all
we had to think of was number 10 Downing Street in England because her
house was number 10 on the estate
She also mentioned that she went to all the parties and most of the activities
in the centre in Ard Aoibhinn.
